The design of the regular iPad really hasn't changed much over the years. To test it, I pulled out my 1st Generation iPad to place it side by side against the 9th Generation model. The heavy bezel design is a little tired now, given that Apple has shown it's open to more edge-to-edge-style tablet displays on other iPads, but it's still a fully capable display. TrueTone is nice to have, and I can't imagine not activating it once it's there, but in itself it's unlikely that recent iPad buyers should upgrade for that themselves.

It's a very different story around the front of the 9th Gen iPad. Here, Apple goes from the 1.2MP sensor found on the 2020 model to a 12MP sensor. IPad performance: A13 isn't super fast, but plenty of power for the most part

Another major upgrade for the 9th Generation iPad is under the hood, swapping the A12 Bionic in the 8th Generation model for the A13 Bionic.

If you want to track it down with a cell phone, that basically means that the 9th Generation iPad is the iPhone 11 in a much bigger case. Apple hasn't officially announced how much RAM it's dropping into its tablet line, but an iFixit teardown reveals that they have 3GB of RAM. Comparatively, the next most expensive iPad, the iPad Mini, runs with 4GB of RAM. However, Apple could get a lot more out of its smaller RAM allotment than you might think, as it controls not only the design of the hardware but also the way iPadOS talks to that hardware.

Want to kick back with a Netflix binge, or idle some time on an Apple Arcade title? There is more than enough power here.

Another aspect the benchmarks show is the rough spot where the 9th Gen iPad is a decent upgrade. It's more powerful than the 2020 8th Generation model, but it also still has enough grunt to run apps without notable issues unless you're churning out 4K video files all the time or similar. However, if you have an iPad that's older than that, the performance difference is much more profound.

One nice touch for the 9th Gen iPad is that Apple has finally increased the base storage on each model. The cheapest iPad ships with 64GB of storage, while the top-tier model has 256GB. You can't upgrade that storage of course, and Apple will bother you to pay for iCloud storage instead. But at least you're no longer struggling to fit everything into 32GB or less.

On the productivity side, the iPad remains a bit old school, but it's possible to use it as a simple work machine, either via a connected Bluetooth keyboard or Apple Pencil. Now alone in the current generation iPad family in relying on the first Generation Lightning-based Apple Pencil, which can cause confusion if you have a mix of Lightning and USB-C based iPads.

Apple has been very consistent when it comes to battery life claims around the base-tier iPad. For years now, the magic number Apple has touted for the iPad has been "up to" 10 hours of battery life.

Any claim with an "up to" qualifier clearly leaves a lot of stretching room, and to a fair extent. Use the iPad for heavy-duty gaming on the stretch and it will last you less time than if you only surfed the web occasionally for more than a day, for example.

However, with the mix of activities I haven't experienced any battery life with a 9th Generation iPad that is better or worse than the 8th Generation model. That unit can run for about the expected 10 hours, and so can this one. One caveat is that while Apple did supply me with an LTE model, the constraints at home around the pandemic mean that I haven't really tested it with 4G LTE usage in mind. If you're looking for a fully mobile data tablet, you can expect it to last less than 10 hours.

The 9th Generation iPad is the last in the iPad family to retain a lightning connector for charging. Hopefully if there's a 2022 upgrade on the card, it'll switch to USB-C. You at least get a 20W charger in the box, comforting with a USB-C socket inside, meaning that it can also be used to charge other Lightning to USB-C devices like the iPhone 13.

The 9th Generation iPad has very much stayed the course, being only slightly more powerful and capable than its predecessor. However, the app advantages of iPadOS put it in a class of its own, and it's hard to recommend any Android tablet when the entry-level iPad is so relatively affordable.

This also makes it difficult to recommend other iPads outside of a very specific niche. The iPad Mini is more powerful, but you're also faced with a smaller screen that runs the same apps in the same layout style. The iPad Air is now a "luxury" model iPad (or maybe a low-cost iPad Pro), but you must have a need for a lot of processing power in a tablet form factor. If you mostly consume content or work with important web apps, the cheaper 9th Generation iPad is more than capable.
